Resting in the Peace of Hope

Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His steadfast love…” Psalm 33:18

When I read that God fixes His gaze upon us, I am humbled because I feel so small and insignificant in this life. When I think about hoping in His steadfast love, I think of it as trusting Him. A trusting belief that no matter how broken I am, I am so deeply loved by my Father that nothing can ever break that bond. I imagine hope as a belief that His love can conquer anything this life throws at us. Sometimes, the idea of hope is difficult for me to accept because it doesn’t seem like an instant fix. I stop believing in God’s sovereignty and power because He’s not working on my timetable. But when I take a step back, stop focusing on what’s right in front of me, I see Jesus and this love that never changes. And if His love never changes than I can hope…trust that He is working for my good even if I can’t see the details of His plan. It is a reminder that God is in command of everything as big as the heavens, down to the smallest details of our lives (V6-10). Our lives are insurmountable without God. I forget that all the time. I try to take on my daily tasks without God. But this passage reminds me that God not only lives around us, but in us! And just as He spoke the world into being and commands it with only His voice, He minute by minute speaks to us with that same voice, a sweet reassurance that no matter what we face He is with us and in control. And that is something I can hope in.
