Day 12
Hebrews 13:1-6
“Keep your life free from the love of money, and be content with what you have...”
This statement is part of a series of final directives by the author of Hebrews as he closes his letter. It is offered in tandem with the challenge to “be content with what you have,” and the reminder that we belong to a God who will not forsake us.
Churches, like individuals, are susceptible to discontent, and it is often in trying years that this comes out. Can we rest in the Lord in lean years, as we do in plenty? Can we trust Him when His will does not match our ambitions? For this reason, the author teaches us to “be content,” without including a proviso!
Through the years, Chapelgate has had years of plenty, and years of ‘want.’ Both have been important in the story of this church, and each instructive.
In what ways do you protect yourself from an inflated affection for money, and in which areas do you experience the greatest contentment?
