Day 3

2 Corinthians 8:1-15

“...though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.”

The heart of generosity isn’t a gesture, but a Person, and none other than Jesus. While Old Testament Law required that one give a percentage of the first fruits (first harvest) and finest of their crops, in Jesus, God has given everything! Paul offers these words in the context of the generosity of the churches in Macedonia.

He describes their generosity in terms of “a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part.” Note that he doesn’t list the amount, but that “they gave according to their means, of their own accord...” He goes on to say that they begged for the privilege of doing so!

We praise God that by His grace, Chapelgate has been blessed with a spirit of generosity, whether through contributions to our General Fund, or raising extra funds for people, neighborhoods, and nations in need. This is not something we take for granted.

What obstacles in your life are most threatening to living generously?
